Shittleheugh Bastle is a 16th century fortified farmstead in the Rede Valley. This historic building was at the heart of cross border violence during the 16th and 17th centuries.

The bastle, which was previously on the 'at risk' register with English Heritage, has now been safeguarded by Heritage Consolidation. We have re-bedded loose stones, replaced and re- pointed the masonry work. The project was completed in November 2009 in time for the bat breeding season.

As with all of our work the structure was covered, where appropriate, in protective material during the winter months to ensure the frost didn't affect the lime work.
